what is online counselling and how does it work

Online counselling gives you the chance to speak to a therapist online without having to meet them face to face. Sometimes called teletherapy or remote therapy, speaking to someone online, over the phone, or via text can benefit people who need counselling but cannot get to a therapist’s office or those who feel more comfortable in their own home. krysallis therapists offer the same specialist, confidential and personalised therapy online as they do face to face.

Given the length of time we’ve all now spent at home and that we don’t know how far into 2021 it’ll be before life resumes normality, online therapy is vital. Statistics show that mental health issues are on the rise and research suggests that those who have had Covid may be more susceptible to experiencing negative mental health symptoms. One thing that’s for sure is that this time is mentally tough on everyone and that we need to look after our minds in order to look after ourselves. And online counselling is here to help.

For the past year our services have been remote and we will continue to help as many people as we can through online therapy. But before embarking on a new therapy journey, what actually is online counselling and how does it work? Keep reading to find out.

What is online counselling?

Online counselling or online therapy can cover a number of different mediums, including video call, phone call, email and text.

Speak to a therapist from the comfort of your own home can be really beneficial. The different mediums are also there to support those who struggle to find a quiet space for therapy in the home. Perhaps you’d prefer to book a phone call session in while you go on your daily walk?

We work to your needs, making your therapy experience tailored to you and ensuring that you are comfortable at every step. All of our therapists are highly qualified and genuinely here to help.

We offer a range of services for individuals, couples, families and workplace counselling. For personal private therapy, click here. If you’re interested in our organisation or workplace therapy options, click here.

How does online counselling work?

To get started, either contact us using the contact form on the website, speak to our friendly colleague on the phone (01423 857939) or email us.

We will ask you some questions about yourself, how you’re feeling and what you’d like support for. We will contact you for a free consultation to find out how we can help and which of our trained professionals would be best suited to you. If you have a preference of therapist, that can also be arranged.

In the absence of in-person meetings, we’ve moved to platforms like Zoom to continue our work with our clients. Our online services provide the same amount of support and confidentiality as face-to-face sessions and we’re also available on evenings and weekends.

Being online gives us the chance to provide support for people outside of our local area, meaning we can provide online counselling anywhere in the UK and abroad in English speaking countries. Some people prefer this option if they’d prefer to keep therapy sessions separated from their personal life in their local area.

Benefits of online counselling

Is online therapy for you? Here are the advantages of online therapy:

  • Flexibility – the ability to select hours and days which suit you and even speak to a therapist during the work day if you need to, is a plus for many who previously found it difficult to make the time for face-to-face sessions.
  • Reduced travel time – online counselling takes away any travel time which may have made fitting in regular sessions hard for some.
  • Location – you don’t have to speak to someone in your area if you don’t want to. If you’d like to keep therapy separate from your daily life, you may decide to speak to someone further away from where you live.
  • Comfort – being in the comfort of your own home may benefit you and you may be able to express yourself more freely.
  • Increased confidentiality – some find that online counselling is more confidential and discreet. Without having to travel to an office, you may feel you have more anonymity and are less embarrassed at the process of speaking to someone about personal issues.

Is online counselling right for you?

The best way to find out if online counselling is for you is to try. Every situation and person is unique, and what works for one person may not work for someone else. At krysallis we have a range of therapists waiting to listen and support you.

Some people feel more comfortable with online or digital therapy, especially during times of Covid and maintaining social distancing for those who are at risk.

Give online therapy a try, you never know, it could be the best thing you ever do for yourself.
